Library Partners: Jeff Moran, Story Slam MC Extraordinaire

Telling a story is an act of joy. Telling a story in front of a live audience is an act of bravery. But creating a space where people feel comfortable enough to share their own stories is a different kind of talent altogether. Opening an event, breaking the ice, setting the guardrails, and guiding an unpredictable evening is no small feat. If you've ever stepped into a Teton County Library Story Slam, you know exactly who makes it look effortless: Jeff Moran.

Jeff’s journey to becoming the library’s master MC didn’t begin 11 years ago when he hosted his first Slam. It didn’t even begin 22 years ago when he took on an accidental MC gig on the Warped Tour. It began in childhood, watching his mother captivate a room with a story. “She was confident, poised, a natural talker with a big personality,” Jeff recalls. “She was not much of a fact checker; she was an entertainer with a keen ability to embellish.”

Today, Jeff weaves that inherited magic into a vital piece of our community fabric. For the last 73 Story Slams, he has stepped up to the microphone not simply to tell stories, but to make room for anyone who wants to share.

Creating a Space for Vulnerability

Over the course of a two-hour event, Jeff accomplishes something rare in modern public life: he creates a welcoming, inclusive space where neighbors from every walk of life can stand up, be vulnerable, and share deeply personal stories.

It all begins with the tone he sets. For first-time storytellers like Karen Terra, Jeff creates an atmosphere that feels more like a circle of friends than an audience. “Jeff engages the storytellers and the audience in an authentic, unscripted way,” she says. “This environment makes the crowd feel like friends rather than judges.”

To help put everyone else at ease, Jeff always takes the plunge first. Veteran storyteller Neil Moore says that this opening story sets the stage for the rest of the evening. “Jeff gives the audience a feel for volume, length, and tone before anyone else takes the stage. He keeps the crowd engaged the entire time and reads the room perfectly.”

The Engine Behind the Energy

The magnetic energy surrounding Story Slam has allowed the program to grow organically, fueled almost entirely by word-of- mouth. This momentum is directly tied to Jeff’s personality and charisma.

To keep the series fresh, Jeff’s own life adventures- like moto trips through Baja- help to maintain his ongoing list of potential themes and stories to share. When the night arrives, his full attention is on the storyteller, the audience, and all the transitions in between. When asked how he seamlessly navigates an unscripted evening, Jeff shares, “The hamster is on the wheel as fast as it can go, constantly working out how to connect to each story and transition to the next.”

That relentless dedication doesn’t go unnoticed. “Jeff understands the assignment,” says Teton County Library Adult Programs Coordinator, Leah Shlachter. “He pays close attention, he’s quick-witted, reliable, and shows up prepared. He genuinely wants the Story Slam to succeed.”

Partnership for the Library, Partnership for the Community

While Jeff is the dynamic frontman on stage, the enduring success of Story Slam is a deeply collaborative effort. From day one, Jeff has worked in close partnership with Leah. Together, they operate as equal co-conspirators. While Jeff directs the microphone, Leah produces behind the scenes, engaging with participants and cultivating the welcoming, neighborly atmosphere that defines the evening.

From that memorable first Story Slam themed “Bad Idea” in 2015 to the recent night of “YES” stories, Jeff has been an exemplary library partner. He invests his time, shows up prepared, and celebrates the raw honesty of every individual who speaks.

Why Story Slam Matters

We are the sum of our stories. When we share them publicly, we inevitably form a human connection. Story Slam gives people a safe place to take a creative risk, and in doing so, discover friendships they might never have found otherwise.

Thanks to Jeff Moran's long-standing commitment to free, accessible public storytelling, this valley isn’t just a place where people live- it is a community where we listen to one another.
